Two price seasons

Many sights in Tibet price tickets by season: 1 May to 31 October is the peak season, and 1 November to 30 April is the off season, when many tickets drop by around half and hotel rates fall sharply.

Off-season is quieter and cheaper

Winter days are sunny and dry, the light is clear and the crowds are gone. The trade-off is cold nights, occasional snow on the passes and shorter opening hours at some sites.

Examples of off-season prices

  • Potala Palace: 200 yuan in peak season, 100 yuan in off season.
  • Namtso: 120 yuan in peak season, 60 yuan in off season.
  • Tashilhunpo Monastery: 80 yuan in peak season, 40 yuan in off season.
  • Everest base camp direction: 180 yuan in peak season, 90 yuan in off season.

Discounts

At the Potala Palace, students in school, people with disabilities, serving military personnel, teachers in post and senior citizens with the relevant certificates normally pay half of the seasonal price; children under 1.2 m enter free.

Prices and policies are set by each site and can change; treat the figures as a guide and confirm when you book.

FAQ

How much cheaper are tickets in the off season?
Many sites in Tibet charge peak-season prices from 1 May to 31 October and off-season prices from 1 November to 30 April, with many tickets roughly halving and hotel rates falling noticeably. Exact prices and policies are set by each site and can change.
When is the best time to visit Lhasa?
July, August and September are usually the most comfortable months; most rain falls then but days are often clear. Winter brings plenty of sunshine, fewer visitors and lower prices, though the temperature swing is large and some sites shorten their hours.
How long does processing take?
Standard applications are usually completed within a few working days once materials are complete and the itinerary settled, counting from the point materials pass review; supplementation time and holidays are excluded. Express shortens the cycle through priority handling but does not change the requirements.
Are there health requirements for travelling to Tibet?
The plateau is high in altitude; travellers with heart disease, severe hypertension, respiratory conditions or who are pregnant should consult a doctor before departure. Rest well on the first day, avoid strenuous exercise and alcohol, and drink plenty of water.
