How it works

  1. Confirm the itinerary: fix entry and exit dates, the cities and route you plan to visit, and whether any border areas are involved.
  2. Submit online: choose a service item, entry date and number of travellers on this site, enter each traveller's name, document type, document number and nationality, and upload a photo of the document data page.
  3. Pay online: after payment the order enters the processing queue.
  4. Review and declaration: a coordinator checks that the materials are complete, then files the declaration; you will be contacted if anything is missing or inconsistent.
  5. Issue and delivery: once completed, the permit is sent as an electronic file to the email address on the order. Print it in colour and carry it with you.
  6. Verification on arrival: present the permit together with your original document as arranged by the receiving party.

Materials usually needed

  • A clear photo or scan of the passport (or equivalent travel document) data page, valid for the trip.
  • A photo of the Chinese visa page where applicable; some cases also require a residence permit or entry record.
  • Entry and exit dates, route, and accommodation arrangements.
  • Occupation: some cases require this. Requirements may differ for journalists, diplomats and certain other occupations — please answer accurately so it can be checked.

Common reasons for return

Blurred or glare-affected document photos, name spelling that differs from the document, entry dates inconsistent with the itinerary, a missing visa page, or a traveller count that does not match the name list. Check each item before submitting — it noticeably shortens processing.

About originals

The permit is usually delivered as an electronic file that you print in colour yourself; in some cases a paper original may be required and you will be told separately. Do not lend your permit to anyone else — the permit and the traveller's document must match.

FAQ

What is the Tibet Travel Permit, and do I need one?
The Tibet Travel Permit is the entry document foreign travellers need to travel in Tibet, filed on their behalf by a local travel service in Tibet. Travellers with a foreign passport or Taiwan-related documents usually need one; travellers with a mainland Chinese ID card generally do not, but need a border pass for border areas.
What documents are required?
Usually a clear photo of the passport (or equivalent travel document) data page, a photo of the Chinese visa page where applicable, entry and exit dates, route and accommodation, and occupation. For border areas, specify the exact areas you plan to visit.
Do children and seniors need separate applications?
Yes — permits are issued per person, so each traveller needs their own document details and permit. Children must have their own document such as a passport and cannot simply be listed under an accompanying adult.
Where do I apply for a border pass and what do I need?
Foreign travellers normally have it arranged by the receiving service together with the permit. Holders of a mainland ID card can apply at the police station where they are registered, free of charge, with an ID card, household register and two one-inch photos, stating the prefecture and county to be visited. Applications in Lhasa go through a travel service, require you to appear in person and a service fee applies, usually completed in one working day.
