The line

The Qinghai-Tibet railway links Xining with Lhasa and was one of China's major engineering projects of the new century. It is the first railway to reach the Tibetan plateau and the highest in the world.

On board

Carriages are oxygen-supplied, with soft sleeper, hard sleeper, hard seat and a dining car. Soft sleeper berths are few and sell out early in peak season, so book ahead.

Compartments and meals

A soft sleeper compartment has four berths with bedding, a small table and a flask; staff push meal trolleys through the train at mealtimes and there is also a dining car.

Medical support

Because of the altitude, each train carries medical staff, and first-aid stations operate at key stations on the plateau section for altitude-related problems.

Comfort

Carriages have displays showing outside temperature, speed, oxygen content and altitude — useful for understanding how your body is adapting as the train climbs.

FAQ

What is the Qinghai-Tibet railway like on board?
Carriages include soft sleeper, hard sleeper, hard seat and a dining car, with oxygen supplied throughout. A soft sleeper compartment has four berths with bedding, a small table and a flask; meal trolleys pass at mealtimes and the dining car is also available. Because of the altitude the train carries medical staff, and first-aid points operate at key stations on the plateau section.
Is altitude sickness milder if I fly or if I take the train?
Each has trade-offs. Flying is quick and lets you rest at your hotel soon after arrival, with easy access to medical care. Overland travel climbs gradually, which in theory helps acclimatisation, but long rough drives and high passes are exhausting and can trigger symptoms. Choose according to your time and fitness.
Should I take the Sichuan-Tibet road or the Qinghai-Tibet line?
The Sichuan-Tibet road has the richest scenery but much of it is gravel, with mudslides in the rainy season and snow closures in winter — better for experienced travellers with time. The Qinghai-Tibet line has the best road conditions and services but less dramatic scenery, suiting first-time visitors who prefer not to fly.
